How to Style Your Wardrobe for Fall Family Photoshoots

One of the most frequent questions my clients ask me during our pre-session consultation is, "What should we wear?". So I've pulled together some helpful tips for successful wardrobe planning to create a cohesive style for your family's photographs.

PICK A COLOR PALETTE

For "in season" style, an easy starting point is to check out Pantone's current fashion color picks, in this case, Pantone's Autumn/Winter 2021/2022 color palette.

If you aren't feeling their choices, earthy tones and neutrals are always a safe pick.

Here are a few of my faves from this season's pick:

KEEP YOUR LOCATION SETTING IN MIND

You want to compliment your surroundings while creating contrast. Standing out from your background is important so that you and your family "pop" and remain the focus without getting washed into your surroundings. For example, if you are going to be in a wooded area with lots of greens and browns, opt for wearing reds or blues.

COORDINATE OUTFITS WITH A BALANCE OF PATTERNS AND SOLIDS

Limit your outfit choices to only one bold pattern. Avoid anything super busy or overly vibrant. On some occasions, a secondary subtle pattern that compliments the style as a whole is also acceptable. Pull solid colors from the pattern to create a coordinated mix that blends everyone's outfits into a cohesive style. This allows for individuality while still coordinating as a family.
